Fellow XWARN'ers:

Having been in the military and now working for the military as a civilian,
I'm a big fan of mission briefings and debriefings. A couple of weekends
ago, I was net control for the Saturday portion of Abi Khan Horse
Challenge, and it was my first real net control not largely run by a
script. So putting my money where my mouth is, I put together a debriefing
from the event:

Abi Khan is one of the more challenging events in the region because we
don't just track the lead and tail participants rather ALL of the
participants, and there were 60 some teams (riders + horses)
participating. Even under the best of circumstances this can be
challenging. But we were short on help, a radio failed forcing one of the
volunteers and net control to setup a cell phone text messaging net, the
course was vandalized ahead of the event requiring me to relay instructions
out to the volunteers, maps were horrible, and the combination of the
topography and location of the XWARN VHF repeater makes it so that HTs are
borderline adequate.

Be looking for me to experiment with some of the things I recommend such as
a cell phone location tracker app built specifically for events like
these. If anything comes of it, I'll be sure to share with the group at a
meeting.
